We get the feeling that these musicians are comfortable together, comfortable enough to take chances. But this was the one that put him on the map, bringing his oud (Arab lute,) tar (an ancient frame drum), and plaintive vocals to a much wider audience. Born in 1929, El Din has dedicated his life to the music of his ancestral homeland of Nubia, much of which now lies underwater in the shadow of the Aswan Dam. The title track, a 21-minute meditation based on the creaking, rhythmic sounds of a wooden water wheel, later became his signature work. Despite the unadorned simplicity of his forces, El Din evokes centuries of laboring agrarian workers. The band, originally led by brothers Walford Tyson and Delvin Tyson (who has since drowned), went on to record sporadically in the '80s, typically fusing political and ecological lyrics with an authentic roots style similar to that of fellow Londoners Aswad. After a decadelong recording sabbatical, the band returned to active duty in 2001 and subsequently recorded six new tracks for the formidable Roots Controller compilation. The gospel-tinged vocals, peppy horn charts, and hypnotic rhythms are once again in full effect on the new material, with highlights "True Rasta" and "Cover Up" proving that Misty haven't lost a step in their time away. The album is filled out by five select tunes from the group's '80s albums and two raw live tracks from 1979's phenomenal Live at the Counter Eurovision. Its diversity of styles is proven by the range of Bach (2nd movement from keyboard concerto in F, BWV 1056 and Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, from Cantata no 147) and Vivaldi (Concerto in D RV 93) selections on the one hand and Tan Dun's modern (first movement from his guitar concerto) and Christopher Rouse's equally new (first movement from his "Concert de Gaudi") selections on the other. This later piece rounds off the recital with real panache. Music of all periods is performed with great éclat and élan. Mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer sings Rodrigo's "Aranjuez, ma pensée" as well as "Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair" and Martini's "Plaisir d'amour". She sings them as beautifully as I have heard by any other singer, with the possible exception of Nana Mouskouri. Her vocal selections are also interspersed throughout the album in a most effective manner. Zapateado by Regino Sainz de la Maza is despatched with just the right amount of breeziness as are all the short "etudelike" pieces. The great guitar virtuoso Laurindo Almeida is represented by a short but jazzy Choro "Historia do Luar"; while another Choro Alegre (A hug for Tiberio) by Gaudencio Thiago de Mello is dashed off with great effusiveness. Albinoni's alleged "Adagio" is rendered with much pathos as is Tarrega's romantic "Recuerdos de la Alhambra". Toru Takemitsu's almost bluesy "Londonderry Air" provides a piquant mid-point for the entire recital. Altogether, this is an excellent representation of Ms. Isbin's artistry. Definitely recommended. The music starts with an extension of her original tune, "Time's Up," the final track on "Time Control." Hiromi then gives a dramatic voicing to the theme of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise." As the tune progresses, she and Fiuczynski trade some very playful fours, and Valihora takes a fresh approach, occasionally giving a backbeat to the jazz standard. In keeping with her defiance of easy categorization, Hiromi then covers Debussy's eternally famous "Claire de Lune," followed by the driving jazz standard, "Caravan," written by Juan Tizol and made famous by Duke Ellington. Hiromi's rendition has an almost Zappa-esque feel with a heart-pumping drum solo. Paying homage to the legendary Jeff Beck, the group covers "Led Boots," with Hiromi's keyboards sounding very much like the whah-whah effect on a guitar. In a complete 180, the band follows the Beck tune with Rogers & Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things," a song from the stage and film versions of The Sound of Music that later became jazz standard repertoire thanks to John Coltrane. "Ue Wo Muite Aruko" ("I Look Up When I Walk") was the only Japanese pop song to make it to #1 on the American pop charts. The song was released in Japan in 1961 and in the United States in 1963. Hiromi takes the still popular song and turns it into a funky explosion. "XYG" is Hiromi covering Hiromi. The track is an in-your-face adaptation of the song of the same name from her 2003 debut album, with the addition of Fiuczynski's roaring guitar. The album closes with Hiromi on solo piano, putting her spice on the Gershwin classic, "I Got Rhythm." They play in the Tishoumaren ("music of the unemployed") style, and sing mostly in the French and Tamashek languages. Their songs mostly cover the subject of independence for their people from the government of Mali. They are said to be the first Tuareg band to use electric guitars. Having recorded many albums available on cassette over their eighteen years, the group recorded their first album for the CD format in December of 2000; the album was known as The Radio Tisdas Sessions and was their first recording available outside of Africa. The Western world first took great notice of Tinariwen due to their performance at Le Festival au Désert, a musical festival held in Tin-Essako, Mali, a remote region of the Sahara Desert, in January of 2001. The band released a second album, Amassakoul ("Traveller") in 2004, and played concerts in Europe (where they performed one of the highlights of the 2004 Womad Reading ) and the United States to support the album. Tinariwen's new album entitled Aman Iman, meaning "Water is Life", was released in February 2007. A 52 minute documentary called Teshumara, or the guitars of the revolution recently played in movie theaters in Europe. It tells the history of the Tuareg rebellion and the role played by Tinariwen in this struggle for freedom. It alternates between frenzied tales of decadence a la TENDER PREY, and stately, Leonard Cohenesque ballad of the sort found on HENRY'S DREAM and THE GOOD SON. The one common thread, as always, is the unrelenting horror Cave takes such delight in presenting in his lyrics. From the morbid funeral setting of the gospelly "Lay Me Low" to the sexual abuse scenarios of the driving, profoundly disturbing "Do You Love Me?" LET LOVE IN is not for the timid. The album's highlight is easily the understated, subtly syncopated "Red Right Hand," a tale of a satanic figure, with appropriate horror-film backing track. And so, even though it wasn't economically viable to keep both the Assassinator and King & I albums on the shelves, most of the sets are found here in one convenient set. The two were very different albums. Assassinator was a thoroughly Jamaican album, overseen by Anthony and Ronald Welch and backed by the Roots Radics ; King & I took the Mouse to London, where producer Cliff Carnegie nudged him toward a more crossover sound. However, the arrangement and production vagaries are less pronounced than the tone of the two sets. Assassinator was a decidedly downbeat affair, a melancholy survey of society, heavy with cultural numbers; in contrast, King was brighter and boasted a clutch of love songs. Mouse-A-Mania emphasizes these divisions, yet by intermixing the tracks creates an arguably more satisfying whole than its independent parts. Thus, RAS gives listeners the complete Mouse , encompassing the silly, the serious, the lover man, the party rat, and the personal. The cultural numbers are particularly strong, with "Gun Shot a Cry" and "Assassinator" of special note among a string of excellent numbers, but who could imagine the soulful depths of emotion hidden in the rodent's heart, now laid bare on "De Di Doo" and "Now I Know" ? Equally extraordinary is "Penni-Walli," an inspired and inspiring number where Mouse meets motorcycle, while party pieces like "Mi Brethren Roach" and "I Like Them All" come close to the high watermark of Eek 's classic "Wa-Do-Dem."
