Muzsikás Maramos, The Lost Jewish Music of Transilvania Album : Maramos, The Lost Music of Transilvania Performer : Muzsikás Release date : 1993 Number of discs : 1 Genre : Ethnic Total size : 56,4 MB Total time : 00:49:14 Tracks : 1 Khosid Wedding Dance 4:33 2 The Rooster is Crowing 3:06 3 Dance From Maramaros 3:36 4 Lamenting Song 1:59 5 Ane Ma'amin 2:56 6 I Have Just Come From Gyula 3:04 7 Farewell to Shabbat 3:14 8 Jewish Dance From Szaszregen 3:07 9 Hat a Jid a Wejbele 1:59 10 Jewish Csardas Series from Szek 4:00 11 Khosid Dance 1:38 13 Haneros Halelu 3:11 12 The Greeting of the Bride 3:48 14 Farewell to the Guests 0:41 @ VBR mp3 Back in 1993 I saw an odd album by a previously-unknown-to-me Hungarian band called Muzsikás. Titled, "the Lost Jewish Music of Transylvania," it seemed likely to be, at worst, a different folky take on old Yiddish songs. Instead, it was my introduction to one of the most wonderful folk bands anywhere, and to the ethereal voice of Marta Sebestyén (whose own recordings are never so good as when she records with this band). Even then, the melodies seemed more Hungarian than Jewish, but this is not a bad thing. Good Hungarian folk--and Muzsikás play it better than anyone--is an aural delight. The sawing fiddles and complex time signatures are intensely moving. The irony, however, is that the inflections are not Jewish. The difference is so great that during a discussion of "tradition as avant garde" on the jewish-music discussion list, someone put forward this album as a truly avant garde sound. I guess it is, in its way, as it isn't based on Jewish ways of playing, only Jewish notes. Upon my arrival in Eastern Europe back in 1996 everyone hastened to explain to me how traditional Jewish music in that area was played Jewishly--not like that band Muzsikás did. It was further explained to me that they had simply gotten bad advice when they recorded. They should have spoken, with, say, Bob Cohen, formerly of the Budapester Klezmer Band, now of Di Naye Kapelye, in Budapest. For all that, you can still hear the same core melody as on the Yiddish Theatre song, "Belz," as the band does "Jewish Dance from Szászrégen, and the "Jewish Csárdás" are a wonderful introduction to the Romanian tradition most akin to American bluegrass. Klezmatics fans will also hear an instrumental covered on a recent album of that radical roots klezmer band, here played as "Haneros Halelu". This is a beautiful album. On their way to recover one thing, the band has created something different, yet wondrous, instead. Compounding the ironies, it is also one of the weakest of Muzsikás albums. So be it. It is also good that the band has rescued this repertoire. And, it is worth noting that the band continues to perform this music as they know it, and that it continues to sound beautiful and moving in concert. There is something magic in hearing Sebestyén introduce a Havdalah song as one of her favorite all-time melodies. Sharon Isbin Guitar Concertos Album : Guitar Concertos Performer(s) : Sharon Isbin, Lisbon Gulbekian Foundation Orchestra, Muhai Tang, dir. Composer(s): Christopher Rouse, Dun Tan Release date : 2001 Label : Teldec Number of discs : 1 Total size : 102 MB (mp3), 235 MB (FLAC) Total time : 00:56:09 Individual track details : Christopher Rouse: Concert de Gaudi for Guitar and Orchestra 1. Allegro 2. Largo sereno 3. Svolazzante Dun Tan: Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra “Yi2” 4. Rubato 5. Adagio 6. Andante agitato 7. Cadenza 8. Ending @ 256 Kbit/s mp3 & FLAC Amazon.com Sharon Isbin knows how to pick classical guitar works just about as well as she knows how to play them (which is to say, exceptionally well). On her Grammy Award-winning Dreams of a World, she explored folksy classical guitar works from around the world. On this disc, the music of two guitar concerto world premieres is less-familiar and just as exciting. Christopher Rouse's Concerto de Gaudi for Guitar and Orchestra is rooted in the Spanish idiom, but it has numerous twists and turns. Isbin gets plenty of tricky solo flights here, but the piece also features some truly explosive brass and percussion moments reminiscent of orchestral works by Ives and Revueltas. Tan Dun's commission for Isbin is less structured; there's plenty of improvisation where the guitarist is required to use tremolo to make her instrument sound like a Chinese lute, or p'i-p'a. Again, you'll hear the influence of Spanish composers, though you never lose the influence of Eastern tonalities in Tan Dun's Impressionistic work. It's a fantastic showcase for Isbin's talents, though not necessarily a piece you'll want to hear every day. These live recordings boast great sonics, and the Gulbenkian Orchestra is in fine form. --Jason Verlinde mp3: http://rapidshare.com/files/208382633/C_2001_ShIsConcertos.rar FLAC: http://rapidshare.com/files/208390210/C_2001_ShIsConcertos__FLAC.part1.rar http://rapidshare.com/files/208394355/C_2001_ShIsConcertos__FLAC.part2.rar http://rapidshare.com/files/208398369/C_2001_ShIsConcertos__FLAC.part3.rar

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Nocturama Album : Nocturama Artist : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Release Date : 1997 Lable : Anti Genre : Rock Total time : 00:56:26 Total size : 77,6 MB Tracks : 1. Wonderful Life 2. He Wants You 3. Right Out of Your Head 4. Bring It On 5. Dead Man in My Bed 6. Still in Love 7. There Is a Town 8. Rock of Gibraltar 9. She Passed by My Window 10. Babe, I'm on Fire @192 Kbit/s mp3 Amazon.com After 2001's tender and tormented No More Shall We Part, Nick Cave's Nocturama sounds like the work of a madman spinning desperately and beautifully out of control. Since the Birthday Party called it quits in 1983, Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds have reframed the Party's cranky and disturbing post-punk to encompass sad blues, literary nihilism, and a kind of serenity; witness Shall We Part, and 1997's The Boatman's Call. Those qualities are still present on Nocturama, most notably in the brokenhearted violin that winds through "Right Out of Your Hand" and "She Passed by My Window." But Cave's arrangements embrace a range of styles and textures. The 14-minute-plus noise explosion of "Babe, I'm on Fire" and the dark, wide-open pop of "Bring It On" are looser and rougher than anything since at least 1994's Let Love In. This makes Nocturama feel messy, unpredictable, and even a little dangerous--qualities Cave's music hasn't had in far too long. --Matthew Cooke Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/139223350/__2003_NiCaNoctu__192.rar

Allegro molto @ 320Kbit/s mp3 + APE What we have here is more than a CD; it's a piece of history. From 1951, Moussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition was the first of Mercury's "Living Presence" recordings. Of course, it's monaural but, oh, what glorious monaural! There is some noise, to be sure, yet I doubt than anyone would notice. One is too busy admiring the sonic illusion, so alive it feels more like real life than most modern stereo. It's practically anticlimactic to say that the performances of both the Moussorgsky and the Bartok, recorded a little later, are as legendary as the sound. For years, these interpretations were the yardsticks by which all other versions of the works were measured. These were, indeed, amazing recordings for their time and, thanks to Mercury's continuing remastering efforts, continue to give pleasure today. What could one do but recommend them?! mp3: Download links: http://rapidshare.com/files/303079250/C_Pictures_1951_KubelikCSO__320.part1.rar http://rapidshare.com/files/303081151/C_Pictures_1951_KubelikCSO__320.part2.rar APE: http://rapidshare.com/files/303071576/C_Pictures_1951__Kubelik__CSO__APE.part1.rar http://rapidshare.com/files/303074690/C_Pictures_1951__Kubelik__CSO__APE.part2.rar

Largo 14. Allegro Vivace 15. Wrong Number 16. Woolly Mammoth 17. Wishful Thinking @ 192 Kbit/s mp3 Amazon.com On Music for Two, banjo wizard Béla Fleck and stand-up bass maestro Edgar Meyer effortlessly sail through a challenging program that includes compositions by Bach, a sonata by Henry Eccles, a Miles Davis tune, and a number of self-composed finger twisters. The amazing thing about this varied selection is not its eclecticism--which is only to be expected with these two--but that it all blends together so seamlessly. Fleck's jazz-tinged compositions (like "The Lake Effect") and Meyer's bluegrass-inspired tunes (like "Wishful Thinking") sit so comfortably next to Bach's baroque jewels and Davis's cool jazz that it makes you question the entire of concept of musical classification. (In fact, the Bach preludes, inventions, and partitas translate so well to the banjo/bass arrangements, you have to wonder if old JSB might not have had a bit of bluegrass in his soul.) Music for Two was recorded live at a series of 2001 concerts, where Fleck and Meyer proved conclusively that the banjo and the bass were capable of remarkable subtlety and not just twang and boom. --Michael John Simmons Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/271378615/J_Fleck_2004_MusicFor2__192.rar

Sorrowful Wife, The 10. We Came Along This Road 11. Gates to the Garden 12. Darker With the Day @224 Kbit/s mp3 This album is closely related to its predecessor, THE BOATMAN'S CALL, in that it mines similarly reserved piano-ballad territory. Cave's been fiddling with this sort of thing since THE MERCY SEAT's "Watching Alice," but he seems to have adopted it here as his prevailing modus operandi. The major difference between NO MORE SHALL WE PART and its predecessor is that the lyrics are less overtly relationship-oriented. Instead, Cave offers Jacques Brel-like denunciation of overzealous Christians ("God is in the House"), morality plays ("As I Sat Sadly by Her Side"), and of course, tall tales of terror in the grand Cave manner ("Hallelujah"). The Market Place at Limoges 08. Catacombs 09. Con mortuis in lingua mortua 10. The Hut of Baba Yaga 11. The Great Gate at Kiev @ 320Kbit/s mp3 + APE & CUE Two kinds of loud sounds in the natural world have been growing on the earth since time immemorial. One is the roll of thunder, the other the sound of volcanic eruption. Both of them were feared by mankind for many centuries as the anger of God. However even the roll of thunder has been proved to be the sound caused by an electric phenomenon - that is, it is an electronic sound. Volcanic sound, on the other hand, is produced by the eruption, impact and rubbing of the substances involved; later such dynamic sounds were made by tools - hammers, bellows to make fire, etc. With the passage of time some of these tools were gradually transformed into musical instruments. At present the method of blowing, beating, rubbing, etc., are incorporated into many musical instruments in the symphony orchestra. Electric musical instruments, on the other hand, did not come into existence until the present century. In 1927 Leon Theremin devised the first electric musical instrument, whose pitch was controlled by placing the hand near to or away from its vertical rod. In 1928 Maurice Martenot, a French musician, invented the ondes martenot, which is considered the father of the present music synthesizer. It has been said that electric sound is not expressive because it is not a natural sound but an artificial one made by a machine. However, I think that natural sound implies the rustle of the leaves by the wind, the murmur of a brook and the sound of the waves beating upon the shore. In pianos, violins, flutes and other instruments the determination of their musical scales and the methods of their resonance are made by the art of mankind, so their sounds are not intrinsically natural but mechanical. Compared to the traditional instruments with a history of many centuries, electric musical instruments have a history of only 50 years. In addition, their shapes are not yet established, so the player is apt to become disorientated. Players of these instruments equivalent in ability to virtuosos of the piano or violin have not yet appeared. I think we must make more effort to study electric musical instruments for the future. I have used a great variety of electrical sound producing and controlling devices, as in my previous album Snowflakes are Dancing. I have been encouraged to believe that my efforts have produced music that is truly expressive, evoking the emotions of a high musical experience. It is very rewarding. - Isao Tomita mp3: http://rapidshare.com/files/266709070/C_Pictures_1974_Tomita__320.rar APE & CUE: http://rapidshare.com/files/267284514/links_Pictures_Tomita_APE_CUE.txt

Wake Me Up Before I Sleep @ 128 Kbit/s mp3 Amazon.com Eclecticism is one of the defining characteristics of the current cultural era, but while anyone can slap together a collage, few can unify disparate elements into a whole. About 10 minutes into their second album, In A Bar, Under the Sea, the quintet Deus based in Antwerp, Belgium, settle on a groove so graceful they perform scattered sounds both tastefully and effortlessly. Combining perfect pop and a handful of varied rock flavors with avant jazz and classical touches, Deus offers a consistently excellent stream of music as listener-friendly as it is challenging. Mind you, it isn't always so cohesive. In A Bar begins with an all-out assault on the senses, a low-fi acoustic blues rant followed by a sampled sound bite advising listeners to "be your own dog," interrupted by a James Brown break beat, invaded by a grunge guitar crunch. Then comes a funk bass and guitar groove, leading into a call-and-response rap/shout with a falsetto soul chorus, and into a middle section of synth dance pop. "Opening Night" overlays two different pop melodies by two very different singers, with guitar and piano lines weaving through. And "Theme from Turnpike" uses a Mingus bass sample, Beefheartian vocals, sound effects, James Bond guitar, horn, and string arrangements, Latin percussion, and free-roaming sax to create something both eerie and warm--not far from Tom Waits at his best. Keep going and you'll also hear pop punk in "Memory of a Festival" and whispery cabaret jazz in "Nine Threads," set among more typical, playful tunes. But admixing more sounds than can fit into the diminutive kingdom of Belgium, Deus's sum becomes a rich, dynamic chamber music for a postmodern world. --Roni Sarig Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/264081870/R_dEUS_1996_UnderTheSea__128.rar

Dje Dje L'Aye 12. Macumba 13. Bissimilai @ 320 mp3 Amazon.com Over the years, Benin-born singer Angelique Kidjo has mixed her native African music with elements of other styles. While 1998's Oremi looked at the music of the United States and 2002's Black Ivory Soul found Kidjo tasting the fruits of Brazilian music, the third installment of Kidjo's New World trilogy, Oyaya!, is her take on Caribbean music. Here she retraces old slave trade routes to connect African root music styles to such offshoots as salsa, bolero, meringue, calypso and ska. Of the 13 originals, Congo Habanera is a particularly potent combination of salsa-fueled grooves, watery highlife guitars and African drumming. Singing in French, Fon and Mino, Kidjo's world-class voice can be keening and hard-edged ("Bissimilai") or coy and gentle ("N'yin Wan Nou Wé"), often juxtaposing the two extremes in the same song ("Bala Bala"). Sanae Marahati Al-Barakiya – La Musique de Melhoun Album: Al-Barakiya – La Musique de Melhoune Vol.3 Artist: Sanae Marahati Label: Fassiphone Genre: Melhoune Time: 01:06:00 Total size: 98,3 MB Individual Track Details: 1.Lousaya 2.Ari Alique Ya Mohamed 3.Zawkna Vhamak 4.Damlij @VBR mp3 Malhun (or Milhûn, in Arabic الملحون) meaning the melodic poem is a Moroccan music that borrows its modes from the Andalusian music. It is a kind of urban, sung poetry that comes from the exclusively masculine working-class milieu of craftsmen's guilds. Origins The melhun, originally a pure literary creation, emerged as a poetic art today known in Morocco under the name of qassida (meaning poem) (in Arabic القصيدة) or zajal (in Arabic الزجل). Combined with music, it quickly spread across the country where it acquired fame particularly among artisans. Music The qassida (laqsida in Moroccan dialect) of the melhun is based on two essential elements: the overtures preceding it and the parts of which it is composed. aqsâm (in Arabic الاقسام) verses sung solo interrupted by the harba refrain (meaning launch) (in Arabic الحربة). Harba, the origin of which goes back to the 16th century, is a refrain taken up between the verses by the sheddâda (group of singers and instrumentalist-singers)(in Arabic الشداشة). Another refrain called dridka in Arabic الدريدكة) is a simplified form of the harba, taking off from an accelerated rhythm to announce the end of a qassida The qassida however preserved the division of the text in stanzas as in the Andalusian song: the verse (ghson meaning branch) can include from eight to sixteen verses, a short refrain or harba offers an alternation which makes it possible to break the monotony of the musical discourse of the Melhoun song. This gave rise to the sûruf, subsidiary procedures employed by singers to produce an even greater effect on the audience and above all to correct the rythm. Al-Maghrawi (16th 17th centuries) created from dân, a word that has no meaning, verses which were used as the basis for versewriting by Moroccan folk poets. VII Finale [00:03:01] Background information: Just as Franz Liszt created new repertoire and technique for the piano by transcribing Symphonies and Operas and then developing new techniques with which to play them, Kazuhito Yamashita took a similar path in the early 1980's and so revolutionised the world of possibilities on the guitar. By transcribing well known pieces of orchestral music for solo guitar he has encouraged a trend which could make classical guitar much more appealing and accessible to concert programmers and the general concert going audience. Danse Russe 17. Chez Petrouchka 18. Le Semaine Grasse (Shrovetide Week) @ VBR mp3 Transcibed and Performed by JEAN GUILLOU, ORGAN Recorded at the Great Kleuker-Steinmeyer organ of the Tonhalle, Zürich In composing these musical Pictures, Mussorgsky not only acheived a true synesthetic phenomenon, but also created a completely original sonic architecture, unprecedented and quite independant of any previous mode of musical expression. This uniqueness stems primarily from the motifs used to represent the Pictures which, like the various models that serve as a painter's subjects, are incongruously dissimilar and remain perpetually estranged from one another by virtue of their diversity, yet are linked by the artist's stylistic language. Also in response to the logical necessity to unify the work as a whole, Mussorgsky created a series of interludes entitled "Promenades", the theme of which pervades the entirety of the compositions. - Jean Guillou - Translated by Lucien Gerber Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/260763108/C_Pictures_1988_Guillou.rar

Matar Muhammad Tribute to a Master of the Buzuq Album : Homage à un maitre du buzuq Artist : Matar Muhammad Release date : 1996 Label : Inedit Number of discs : 1 Total size : 127 MB Total time : 00:55:54 Tracks : 1. Maqâm Bayâti مــقــام بـيــاتـي @ 320 Kbit/s mp3 Matar Muhammad was born in 1939 in the Bekaa plain (Lebanon). He came from a family of Gypsies, wandering musicians from father to son. From the age of seven onwards, his father and elder brother initiated him into buzuq playing. He made his professional debut in the early sixties, through the BBC's Arab programmes, but he really became famous through the performances of "Arduna ila al-abad" during the Festival of Baalbek. After that, his reputation extended throughout the Arab world and beyond. Heir to an oral tradition, his inbred gifts allowed him to practice a truly sophisticated art in an empirical manner. His course has been that of an outstanding soloist and an imaginative improviser who nevertheless remained faithful to the spirit and theoretical principles of Arab music. The issuing of these recordings, made during public performances at the Beirut Theater in 1972, is one of the last tributes to his art. Indeed, afflicted for several years by a partial paralysis which prevented him from playing his instrument, Matar Muhammad died prematurely on December 7th, 1995 while he was waiting for this last record to be released. Faithful to the spirit of his forebears, he has been making a point of transmitting this tradition to his young son who is nine years old.
