On their second CD there are no fancy studio tricks or multiple overdubs. They stick to what they've shown they do well -- keep the music raw and emotional. While there are similarities to the desert blues of Mali, these Tuareg nomads from the Western Sahara are as much as rock band as the Stones at their best, capable of conjuring up magic with a guitar riff or lick. Oftentimes, the music has the same bluesy, undulating, hypnotic rhythm of a camel crossing the sand, as on "Aldhechen Manin." But they can also crank the amps and unleash something to tingle the spine and feet, which they do on "Oualahila Ar Tesninam," as frantic and primal a piece of rock & roll as you're likely to find. There's even a touch of rap on "Arawan." But there's a complexity in their basic approach, the interlocking layers of electric guitars and the plaintive, defiant voices. To listen to Tinariwen is to believe once more in rock and its power. This is angry and passionate; it's dangerous music in the very best sense. The sweet South African harmonies of this band, which was brought to these shores thanks mainly to Paul Simon's Graceland record, are still as strong as ever. Having worked with everyone from Dolly Parton to Eric Clapton, the ten member group, led by founder Joseph Shabalala, has released a new album but under rather tragic circumstances. While on tour in 2002, Shabalala's wife Nellie was murdered by a masked gunman outside a church in South Africa. There are still no leads and no suspects. So after enduring hardships through apartheid, this is possibly the hardest album for the group. But it is also one of their best. Shabalala's vocal starts off the title track, which slowly gives way to the group's a cappella greatness. From the rolling of the tongues to the give and take Shabalala leads the other nine through, the sound is a bit somber but there is a hopeful spirit in it. The melody near the halfway point is another plus. It's a good introduction into the rest of the record. "Uqinisil' Ubada (Lord Is the Light and Truth)" is more upbeat and up-tempo, despite still being void of any instruments aside from voice. Shabalala starts the refrain that is the foundation of the song and then proceeds to sing over and at times under the rich tenor and bass harmony. This two-CD set was recorded live in April 1998 and gives the band the best possible platform for what it does. Much of the program is centered around the superb voice of Teresa Salgueiro and songs written by the ensemble's other members. With two acoustic guitars, an upright bass, and a synthesizer, they performed a set of songs that received no remixing or rerecording, a rarity these days for so-called live albums. The interplay between the musicians and singer is never better felt than in this live setting. As with the past efforts, the singer is again accompanied by acoustic guitar, n'goni (African lute), kora harp and balafon (a buzzing marimba). Amidst these earthy arrangements, the Kronos Quartet joins in for "Manian" and "Bowmboi." Having a western and modern classical feel, the music is a departure that nonetheless works because Traore matches their rhythms while staying within her creative vision. At the end of '85 an idea was born to start a studio project with german metal musicians. It was suppost to outshine all independent releases musically. The name Zardoz was rejected followed by the acceptance of the name "Mekong Delta", named after a riverbed in Vietnam.
