So important was Iz's singing to Native Hawa'ians and Hawai'i residents alike that Governor Ben Cayetano declared a statewide day of mourning when Iz passed away in 1997--this despite his controversial Hawai'i-sovereignty politics. Ka Ano'i was the 1991 winner of the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Award for best contemporary Hawai'ian album, and Iz himself won for best male vocalist that year. This album is appealing mainly for its honesty and simplicity: simplicity of tone consistent with the casual ukulele and slack-key sound, and honesty of voice through Hawai'i-enhanced allegorical tracks like "Coney Island Washer Woman" and "I'll Be There." A later version of Iz's "Over the Rainbow" was featured in the 1998 film Meet Joe Black, as well. The label's penchant for producing simple, understated, traditional roots reggae fits perfectly with the group's vintage vocal harmony sound on Serious Thing. This is the Gladiators' second Nighthawk album, following 1982' Symbol of Reality (a third, 1993's Full Time, would be culled from tracks recorded in the early '80s), and it featuers the group's trademark folksy, rural sound, complete with delightful homespun quips like "Old man get dreams; young man see visions." ("Freedom Train") and "Some people love justice; some love revenge" ("Good Foundation"). As expected, the tunes are melodic, although "After You" and "Fling It Gimme" might soound a bit too cutesy for some listeners. The best tune is the driving "My Thoughts," which pounds righteousness into your soul, but really there's little on Serious Thing that stands out (excpet maybe "Rearrange," which only stands out for its striking resemblance to The Mighty Diamonds' "Have Mercy"). This album is more of package deal, with each track flowing quietly into the next and little though of fast-forwarding entering your mind. As such, I wouldn't recommend it as someone's initial introduction to The Gladiators; rather, it's something to savor once you've established your appreciation for the group. Note: the track listing on the Nighthawk CD lists 10 tracks, but that's because it separates the dubs of "My Thoughts" and "Mid-Range" into different tracks when in fact the album contains "disco mixes" of those tunes which play straight through from the vocal track to the instrumental version. Stokowski made three recordings of Night on the Bare Mountain, not counting the one for Fantasia, but Bamert's is equal to any of them, with a beautifully idyllic slow ending. Bamert's treatment of Pictures is a dazzling recreation of brilliant orchestration, but the great gem in this collection is the Boris synthesis. Once again Bamert equals Stokowski's three recordings (1936, 1941, 1968). Obviously Stokowski had on-going ideas for this score; in his last recording (on Decca/London, with the Suisse Romande Orchestra), he added a snippet from the end of the death scene, plus a shimmeringly sustained string chord that ends with soft chimes—an ending he also used in a 1968 Boston Symphony Orchestra concert. Apparently this addition wasn't published, and thus is not used in the Bamert recording. Chandos' sound is their very best, wonderfully capturing this multitude of colorful sounds with a fine sense of space and presence. A fabulous CD! On this 1983 album, the acclaimed mandolinist strings together an assortment of holiday tunes like they're popcorn strung around an ornament-laden pine. With the likes of bassist Rob Wasserman and Bela Fleck in town, Grisman gives the dawg treatment to everything from "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" to "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," closing out, appropriately enough, with "Auld Lang Syne." With picking this tasteful, it's really rather a shame that Acoustic Christmas will inevitably be packed away for 11 months of the year. --Steven Stolder Just so all you Dawg Fans know, David has revealed that it is the voice of Clarence Nash, the original voice of Donald Duck, singing on "We Wish You A Merry Christmas". It seems Mr. Nash was also a mandolin player and entertainer in vaudeville, and one day David, who is a vintage cartoon art fan, spotted a picture of Nash holding a Gibson mandolin. David's wife, a journalist tracked Nash down, and soon the two met. Here's an account by Grisman of what happened next: "About a year later, while finishing my Christmas album, I had one of those rare flashes of vision, and imagined an arrangement of the perennial favorite, "We Wish You A Merry Christmas," featuring Clarence on vocal and myself on mandolin. Fortunately, "Ducky" liked the idea, and thanks to the kind permission of the Disney studios, Clarence and I met in a recording studio two hours before the record was to be mastered, and recorded our little arrangement. The only catch was that the Disney executives insisted Clarence not be credited on the album. Therefore, no one realized that it was the real Donald Duck doing the singing. In fact, a lot of folks thought it was me! Sadly, Mr. Nash passed away a couple of years later, and so now I'd like you all to know that it was, in fact, Donald Duck himself on the Acoustic Christmas album."
