At times suggestive of a simplistic Oregon or some ofthe more sedate offerings of Rabih Abou-Khalil, MADAR is richly steeped in Middle Eastern authenticity and textural folklore. The album's rudimentary nature renders it fairly reflective of the indigenous cultures it takes delight in spotlighting. "Bahia" doesn't feature Garbarek at all but is a rhythmless lullaby dominated by Brahem's oud. Sands shift and parched winds blow when all three players merge on atmospheric, extended jams such as "Qaws", where Garbarek's rural air becomes a nomadic cry trapped within an intertwined mantra of percussion and strings. I wanted to come over, see the U.S., and try my luck." Meeting some other Senegalese, he began playing his harp-like kora with them, and made ends meet by teaching language classes. Although music was his focus, it took 11 years before he issued his first album, the Caribbean-flavored Deeso, followed in 1995 by Vieux Diop (Vieux Jo). During that decade, American ears began to open up to people like Baaba Maal and Salif Keita, and Diop's old friend, Youssou N'Dour. Diop, whose real name is Alioune (Vieux, meaning old, is a nickname from his grandfather), and N'Dour had started out playing and recording together in Dakar's Star Band when they were teenagers, with Diop behind his first instrument, a drum kit. Alioune Diop, alias Vieux Diop, est un maître de la kora qui débute la musique à 11 ans en jouant de la batterie, avant d’étudier à Dakar les instruments traditionnels, kora, djembé et xalam. She received a B.A. cum laude from Yale University and a Master of Music from the Yale School of Music. She was the 1st Prize winner of the Toronto Guitar 1975 competition, a winner of the Madrid Queen Sofia, and the first guitarist ever to win the Munich Competition.effusiveness. Albinoni's alleged "Adagio" is rendered with much pathos as is Tarrega's romantic "Recuerdos de la Alhambra". Toru Takemitsu's almost bluesy "Londonderry Air" provides a piquant mid-point for the entire recital. Altogether, this is an excellent representation of Ms. Isbin's artistry. Definitely recommended. "Nightfall" and "Dawn" are two of my favorite pieces on the album. The musicians bring a wide variety of instruments, which clearly has a large influence on the sound and feel of each track. Like its predecessor, this release contains original material that mixes Arabic music and jazz improvisation and features a stellar band comprised of some of Turkey's finest musicians (this time out Brahem is joined by clarinetist Barbaros Erkose, nay (reed flute) player Kudsi Ergune, and the percussionist from Barzakh, Lassad Hosni). In contrast to Barzakh's livelier mood, though, the sound here is more meditative and even stark at times, especially on solo flights by both Brahem ("Iram Retrouvee") and Erkose ("Etincelles") and by way of Erguner's ethereal improvisations ("Diversion"). The pace picks up on the sympathetically played and joyous ensemble piece "Conte de L'incroyable Amour" and on the impassioned Brahem and Erkose duet, "Nayzak." ECM's typically sparse and airy production compliments Brahem's ascetic material without making it sound too dry.
