Politics as Usual 3. Brooklyn's Finest - (featuring The Notorious B.I.G.) 4. Dead Presidents II 5. Feelin' It - (featuring Mecca) 6. D'evils 7. 22 Two's 8. Can I Live 9. Can I Live II - (bonus track, featuring Memphis Bleek) @ 320Kbit/s mp3 Amazon.com Jay-Z's classic debut is a compelling reflection on his life as a hustler. It's invested with an uncommon complexity and candor that has noticeably faded in his later material. Armed with clever phrasing and sly deadpan wit, Jay-Z navigates indulgent romps ("Can't Knock the Hustle"), thought-provoking introspection ("Regrets"), and devastating street-corner soliloquies ("Friend or Foe") with savvy composure. The beats on Reasonable Doubt, provided by the likes of DJ Premier & Ski, are as irresistibly slick as his persona. "Brooklyn's Finest," his mic-passing session with his friend Notorious B.I.G., takes on a torch-passing significance in the wake of Biggie's death. That song, and the entire album, foreshadows Jay-Z's subsequent ascension to kingpin status. --Del. F. Cowie Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BXKF5JCD http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZWBMTLZ5

Shalom Aleichem 7:12 @ 320 Kbit/s mp3 Amazon Another cross-cultural, acoustic-music synthesis is achieved on this collaboration between Grisman, the bluegrass/swing virtuoso who opens for Allison Krauss Thursday at Wolf Trap, and klezmer star Statman. Both are mandolinists, and on this album of seven traditional klezmer tunes, four Shlomo Carlebach compositions, and one Statman original, Statman challenges Grisman to play up to the tradition's standards, while Grisman challenges Statman to push the tradition's envelope. The result is a creative tension that keeps the music exciting. The two leaders are backed by a band that includes Meyer, classical guitarist Enrique Coria, and Phil Spector drummer Hal Blaine. For Grisman and Blaine, who are ethnically but not musically Jewish, this project is an emotional homecoming and those feelings can be heard in the playing. --Geoffrey Himes Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FM4LP19A http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EWLXSXHF

Hawai'i '78 @ FLAC Amazon.com To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?f=FA0EQ9C9

Sea of Love 10. You Don't Know Me @ 320Kbit/s mp3 Amazon.com Better known among his fans as "Iz," Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a phenomenon in the Hawai'ian Islands totally below Mainland radar. So important was Iz's singing to Native Hawa'ians and Hawai'i residents alike that Governor Ben Cayetano declared a statewide day of mourning when Iz passed away in 1997--this despite his controversial Hawai'i-sovereignty politics. Ka Ano'i was the 1991 winner of the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Award for best contemporary Hawai'ian album, and Iz himself won for best male vocalist that year. This album is appealing mainly for its honesty and simplicity: simplicity of tone consistent with the casual ukulele and slack-key sound, and honesty of voice through Hawai'i-enhanced allegorical tracks like "Coney Island Washer Woman" and "I'll Be There." A later version of Iz's "Over the Rainbow" was featured in the 1998 film Meet Joe Black, as well. Despite his imposing stature, Iz was an embodiment of the simplicity and gentleness in the music itself, more noticeable in this early album than in his later work. --Erik Macki Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CEU7FO9N

Shalom Aleichem 7:12 @ 320 Kbit/s mp3 Review by Jeff Tamarkin: David Grisman and Andy Statman have made two previous duet albums: the free form Mandolin Abstractions (1982) and Songs of Our Fathers (1995), a tribute to the two musicians' Jewish heritage. New Shabbos Waltz is a follow-up to the latter, a set of all-instrumental recordings drawn from traditional Jewish repertoire, some quite ancient, some more recent (two compositions come from the late Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach). Considering the piety surrounding this music --some of the songs are born of the orthodox Chassidic experience, some of war, and at least one, "Ani Ma'amin (I Believe)," was sung in the concentration camps -- much of it is surprisingly joyous in sound. Grisman's mandolin, as always, is exquisite, and Statman contributes both his melodic clarinet melodies and a second mandolin. It's in the additional instrumentation that New Shabbos Waltz becomes truly fascinating, though: who would have ever imagined the renowned Los Angeles studio drummer Hal Blaine, who performed on countless West Coast rock hits during the '60s, laying down the beat for an album of traditional Jewish music? Yet here he is, rockin' out mightily on "Old Klezmer" and several other tracks. Also pitching in is slide guitar whiz Bob Brozman, who contributes subtly to the doleful texture of the ballad "Oifen Pripitchik (On the Heart)." Born in Aleppo in 1962, he grew up in religious circles and attended the rituals of the dhikr from a very early age, presided over by his father, the Shaykh Muhammad Sarmini. Thus the father was able to guide the son by inculcating in him the most essential elements of the sacred repertory. Omar Sarmini then continued his musical education with the city's Arab Youth Club. So, like every self-respecting singer, his education has included an obligatory passage via the sacred repertory of Islam. He is currently one of the rising stars on the musical scene in Syria. At the Parallel @ 320Kbit/s mp3 In 1991 the pair of Dirk Schoufs and Dani Klein lose interest in each other and Dirk leaves the band. Soon afterwards he dies of a drugs-related infection disease. The Album "Time Flies" which is released a year after, is the saddest thus far, with a lot of soul influences but also trips across the border to music of Latin-America. The album is entirely a Dani Klein product, which makes it clear that the group is in fact a singer, a "femme fatale". The Joker (Bojan Zulfikarpasic) 10. Nesrafet (Karim Ziad) @ 320 K bit/s mp3 The muffled and at the same time sonorous call of the Gumbri rings out. This Moroccan string instrument combines melodic and percussive qualities, and stands as a symbol for the music of the Maghreb. Yet before we can get our bearings, a complex Euro-Afro-American sound comes in. Welcome to Paris. Welcome to the multi-cultural ambience of percussionist Karim Ziad’s music. The 34 year old Karim Ziad looks back to his youth in Algiers, a city that, in contrast to its current condition, exuded a multi-cultural flair not so many years ago. It was here that Ziad collected his first musical experiences. Ziad commented, "When I was young I didn’t just hear music from Morocco and Algeria. Algiers was always a cultural melting pot. We had radio and TV, and Europe was around the corner. A half-hour on the plane and you’re there. I didn’t have to think about my music, since all those elements that I was hearing simply came together." Karim Ziad received his first finishing as a percussionist in bands playing at marriages. Within the Maghreb musical repertoire it was necessary to feel as at home with French songs, funk, Berber music, as well as other African and Oriental musical traditions. Karim Ziad came to Paris when he was 20. Here he found a multi-ethnic climate with no barriers or borders. He quickly made contact with other musicians, playing with Joe Zawinul, and with Cheb Mami’s band. He soaked up musical experiences like a sponge, and searched for the best way to combine all those musical elements and tendencies that made up his daily experiences. However he never chanced upon that magic elixir that would leave him satisfied. It was with Nguyên Lê’s "Maghreb & Friends" (ACT 9261-2) that he was able to take the crucial next step. "I learned a lot about how to deal with sound from Nguyên. Even so I approach music differently than he does. He is very intellectual. I on the other hand trust only my heart and my ears." Born On The Bayou (With Booker T. & The MGs) (Bonus Track) 5:58 @ FLAC In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Creedence Clearwater Revival, the legendary band’s first six albums were reissued on September 30th, 2008 by Fantasy Records as six individual expanded-edition CDs. The albums — Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bayou Country, Green River, Willy & the Poor Boys, Cosmo’s Factory and Pendulum, all originally released from 1968-70 —have been remastered and contain B-sides and unreleased studio & live material. The packages artfully recreate the original covers and include previously unpublished photos and new liner notes from veteran music journalists like Ben Fong-Torres and Joel Selvin. Cosmo’s Factory was the fourth and biggest of the string of five Top 10 albums Creedence Clearwater Revival released in 1969 and 1970. Included were “Travelin’ Band,” “Lookin’ Out My Back Door,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” “Run Through the Jungle” and covers from Marvin Gaye (CCR’s signature take on “I Heard it Through the Grapevine”), Bo Diddley, Roy Orbison and Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup. Bonus material includes a bare bones, horns-free remake of “Travelin’ Band,” a live version of “Up Around the Bend” from the 1971 European tour, plus an unreleased version of “Born on the Bayou” emanating from the CCR/Booker T & the MGs summit which took place in 1970 at Cosmo’s Factory studio. Notes were penned by Robert Christgau and Joel Selvin. Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?f=B03EDBCW
