Wake Me Up Before I Sleep @ 128 Kbit/s mp3 *********** Eclecticism is one of the defining characteristics of the current cultural era, but while anyone can slap together a collage, few can unify disparate elements into a whole. About 10 minutes into their second album, In A Bar, Under the Sea, the quintet Deus based in Antwerp, Belgium, settle on a groove so graceful they perform scattered sounds both tastefully and effortlessly. Combining perfect pop and a handful of varied rock flavors with avant jazz and classical touches, Deus offers a consistently excellent stream of music as listener-friendly as it is challenging. Mind you, it isn't always so cohesive. In A Bar begins with an all-out assault on the senses, a low-fi acoustic blues rant followed by a sampled sound bite advising listeners to "be your own dog," interrupted by a James Brown break beat, invaded by a grunge guitar crunch. Then comes a funk bass and guitar groove, leading into a call-and-response rap/shout with a falsetto soul chorus, and into a middle section of synth dance pop. "Opening Night" overlays two different pop melodies by two very different singers, with guitar and piano lines weaving through. And "Theme from Turnpike" uses a Mingus bass sample, Beefheartian vocals, sound effects, James Bond guitar, horn, and string arrangements, Latin percussion, and free-roaming sax to create something both eerie and warm--not far from Tom Waits at his best. Keep going and you'll also hear pop punk in "Memory of a Festival" and whispery cabaret jazz in "Nine Threads," set among more typical, playful tunes. But admixing more sounds than can fit into the diminutive kingdom of Belgium, Deus's sum becomes a rich, dynamic chamber music for a postmodern world. --Roni Sarig Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=18FF9L3O

Recorded live in Amersterdam and Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Frankfurt, Germany; Paris, France. Originally released as a double LP set, RECORDED LIVE was a response to the proliferation of bootlegs of the band's concerts. It was to be as faithful a representation of the band's onstage firepower as possible. In this regard, it succeeds; it's better recorded than their breakthrough UNDEAD, and the performances are generally stronger. The highpoint is the jazzy, nearly 16-minute assault on "I Can't Keep From Crying." (Historical note: On the Blues Project's REUNION IN CENTRAL PARK album, also released in 1973, Al Kooper, who wrote the song, tells the audience that Ten Years After's version paid for his new car that year). There are also enthusiastic run-throughs of the band's best known numbers, including their salacious take on "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" and (of course) their Woodstock showstopper "I'm Going Home." Uncle Jam @ 320 Kbit/s mp3 A SPACE IN TIME was Ten Years After's biggest commercial success. The reasons are pretty obvious; Alvin Lee's songwriting had improved markedly and there was far more stylistic variety than on their previous albums. The big hit here was "I'd Love to Change the World," with its catchy acoustic guitar hook and the immortal opening line, "Everywhere is freaks and hairies." Other highpoints include: "Baby Won't You Let Me Rock 'n' Roll You," the band's first stab at Stones-style raunch (complete with a riff from Led Zeppelin); the country-ish romp "Once There Was a Time"; and the gently folky and surprisingly self-deprecating "Over the Hill," which features strings, a move that would have been unthinkable for this band a year or two earlier. It's hard to compare the studio side of the band with the actual live animal, there just isn't the energy drawn from a close crowd. But having said that it's still a fine piece of work and should be judged on its own merits. The cover was a product of the sixties and it wears this influence front and center. The band broke through with their second album Undead, a live album which featured the track "I'm Going Home", which made the charts in the UK and the US. Their performance of the track at Woodstock made the final cut of the film and soundtrack album, and subsequent album releases benefited, with high chart placings. To summarise English rock then you have to obtain these albums. The guitar swirls, fast solos, breath taking licks quickly followed by the sky line screaching wah wah slides, all underlinned by the professional Hammond, flowing bass and tight drums. This Uk outfit choose classics riffs and strong song writing to unleash a classic 60's / 70's sound. Very cool indeed. Oh by the way I was told by the keybordist that Cricklewood Green was the Grass there Rodie Grew in London, there should be a picture on the back. This combo release of what are 2 of the best albums this band produced is a joy to the ears. You can almost see Alvin Lee dripping his sweat like he used to in his concerts. He is one remarkable guitar player. Shhhh is really grabs you and takes you for a fast ride. Cricklewood Green is such a mixture of sounds that the album has to be heard to be believed. Rock music was transforming itself in 1969-70 and this CD reveals its many faces. Green sounds like the Stones, the Guess Who, Hendrix and Creedence all rolled into one. A true GEM! He has, arguably, achieved iconic status; that his fame was built in large part on a medley of two songs with no connection to Hawai‘i seems almost irrelevant. (Untitled) - (hidden track) @ 320Kbit/s mp3 Amazon.com The artist behind Facing Future, the top-selling Hawaiian album of all time, the late Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole was possessed of a voice so sweet, so tender, and so lovely that it continues to deeply stir those who hear it long after he died. Lovingly assembled and notated by producer Jon de Mello, Alone in IZ World is comprised of both alternate versions of Kamakawio'ole's best-loved songs as well as tracks never before heard by the public. The latter category includes versions of "Hanohano No Na Cowboy," the playfully incomplete opening on "Mona Lisa," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," on which IZ takes a rare turn at harmonizing with himself. In light of his premature passing, devastatingly beautiful alternate cuts of "Starting All Over Again" and "In This Life" are especially poignant. And "Over the Rainbow"--IZ's renditions were heard in Meet Joe Black and Finding Forrester--may never again sound so pure. --Paige La Grone Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=KLWBTWAN http://www.megaupload.com/?d=P1CP2SW0

The tone is mellow, emitting the friendly vibe that so characterized the great singer. The album starts out with some light, slow numbers to set the mood, and after a few songs kicks up to a full-fledged bit of Jawaiian reggae with "Margarita," complete with some keyboard hits to stand in for an organ. A couple of spoken bits from concerts follow, leading into "E Ala E" and a quite happy rendition of "Hene Hene Kou Aka." The tempo drops again for a number of love songs, before eventually returning to "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man." The album finishes with a pair of light numbers, including "Hawai'i Aloha" as a closing farewell song. For a nice overview of Iz's versatility, this isn't a bad album, but for a better look at the typical forms of Jawaiian music Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6VMYACIJ http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UN5GWDPC

A Hawaiian Like Me @ 320Kbit/s mp3 About the Artist Born in Honolulu in 1959, this son of a Ni'ihau mother returned to Ni'ihau to spend the first five years of his life with his Tutu Kane, his Grandfather. In 1964 he returned to Oahu to join his immediate family then on to Makaha on the Waianae Coast where Israel was to learn the importance of his Hawaiian heritage and discover the richness and mystique in the music and culture of his islands. With an ukulele, his constant companion, Israel would sing and play for anyone who listened. The texture of his voice, the songs and the sound of his resonant ukulele constantly create the feeling that a new, musical Hawaii is emerging. Yet, the basics of his musical inventions remain embedded in the rich, warm, musical soil of his Ni'ihau and Makaha Kapunas. Hawai'i '78 @ 320Kbit/s mp3 & FLAC Amazon.com To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?f=FA0EQ9C9
