    Lester Young - Portrait (2001) (10CD Box Set) FLAC EAC rip | 10CD | FLAC - Log - Cue | Full Scans | Release: 2001 | 2.38 GB Genre: Cool, Swing, Mainstream Jazz | Label: Past Perfect Records I am just discovering jazz music and this amazing 10 cd set is a very economical way to explore a wonderful artist. There are performances with Billie Holiday, large group/big band, and small group sets included. All the cds have notes about set dates and personnel and the disks are enclosed in plastic cases. There is also an interesting bio booklet. I am not an expert on jazz so I can't say if this collection is a representative sample of Lester Young's career, but there is a lot of variety here and I have loved listening to this wonderful music. It's a bulletin from another era, the late 1970s, a fertile period in free jazz history which has been sparsely documented. The music itself is not always of the highest level, because Moondoc is not the great innovator in jazz nor the most incredible sax-player, but the nature of the music, the historical context, and the unbelievable quality and dedication with which No Business offered this music back to the world, make this already now one of the most recommended albums of the year. Included are Muntu's first two releases and a third set issued here for the first time. Muntu was an important band. It manifested some of the early activity of free jazz maestro, organizer and bassist William Parker, and his first recorded collaboration with subsequent longtime associate trumpeter Roy Campbell. Furthermore, Muntu also augured the distinguished improvising cooperative Other Dimensions In Music, with identical personnel except for the reed chair. In a bittersweet acknowledgement of the band's import, Muntu's time was up when Moondoc lost his rhythm section of Parker and drummer Rashid Bakr to the prestige (and work) of pianist Cecil Taylor, after more than eight years of joint endeavor. Originally released on the reedman's own label, Muntu's music was little heard in its heyday, although original copies now change hands for ridiculous amounts. At last the music is more widely available, carefully transferred from LP. These guys know what they are doing as the majority of NoBusiness issues are on vinyl, so only occasional clicks and pops betray the source material.     Isaac Hayes - Double Feature: Three Tough Guys & Truck Turner (1993) FLAC EAC rip | 2CD | FLAC - Log - Cue | Full Artwork | Release: 1993 | 691 MB Genre: Funk, Soul, Soundtracks, Blaxploitation | Label: Stax, Fantasy Isaac Hayes not only was an innovative composer, songwriter, producer, and performer in the '60s and '70s, he was also an actor and appeared in several "blaxploitation" films during the early '70s. Hayes did double duty on these projects, writing and conducting the soundtracks for several, including the two featured on this twin-CD reissue. Neither Truck Turner nor Tough Guys was a particularly memorable film, but Hayes' effective use of symphony orchestras and strings against a vocal backdrop often made the music the best part of the movie. Isaac proves with these 2 albums not simply that he was a genius, but more than that. He was in a class all by himself. I hate to say he was the first (because my music history only spans my 39 years) but at this time was the only artist I know of doing what is often called "orchestra soul". Even though previous reviewers gave positive feedback I question if they really "got it". Hint: listen to the first tracks of both albums with a grain of salt. Remember the black movies of the time always had an "opener" song boasting of the main characters in an effort to define them. Then, after track one, sit back. It is best to be riding on a long drive, or be doing something without distraction. What you get is a jump into mellow, heavily orchestrated soul/jazz/orchestra or whatever you want to call it that only Isaac was doing. Sad that he probably was limited in his commercial albums to more direct "soul" for album sales, but I bet his true passion was this music. Imagine 2 albums of songs with the complexity of "Cafe Regio" from Shaft. Need I say more* I believe Truck Turner is the more complex of the 2 but not "better" than Shaft.
